After 17 years of absence, the fifth-generation of the legend Toyota Supra officially debuted at the North American auto show with a platform shared from the BMW Z4 Roadster.
After a 17-year stop and ten years of hiding, Toyota officially reincarnated the legendary Supra. Toyota Supra 2020 is on display at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show auto show. Almost 20 years is a very long time for Supra fans, but it seems Toyota will not disappoint them. The new generation Supra is developed by Gazoo Racing division, so it is called GR Supra 2020.
Fans of this model will recognize Supra 2020 without inheriting any lines from the Supra Mk4 logo generation. The FT-1 concept model launched in 2016 has done so well in the design stage, so Toyota decided to apply this design to Supra 2020.
Similar to previously leaked images, Supra 2020 has a muscular appearance that inherits from FT-1. The cluster of lights, carbon front divider to the ‘double-split’ hood are all original from the concept model. The most obvious difference is that Supra’s front end is shorter because the nose protruding is removed, replaced by a grille.
In the back, slender LED taillights along with the protruded rear end of the car as a fixed-wing impeller, indeed replace well the large loose wing on FT-1. Large size brake lights F1 racing is placed in the middle of two sports round mouthpiece. These characteristics also inherit from FT-1.
Unlike the exterior, the cabin of Supra 2020 is arranged quite similar to the new generation BMW Z4 Roadster. This was anticipated because Toyota and BMW jointly developed the chassis for this sports car. If FT-1’s inspiration continues to be applied to the inside, Supra’s interior compartment may be sportier.
The most similarities with the Z4 Roadster are the iDrive control system on the center console and iPad-style infotainment screen. The dashboard on Supra 2020 is also a digital format, which can display gravity parameters, time to complete the lap, and so on. The inspiration from Supra Mk4 only shown on Supra is the concentrated cabin layout for the driver. Shiny metal materials and carbon fiber were also found quite a lot inside Supra 2020.
However, Supra’s performance parameter is the point that gets the most attention. Toyota Supra 2020 has a 6-cylinder turbocharged engine in line, 3.0L capacity developed by BMW. This engine produces 335 horsepower and 494 Nm of torque. However, the engine on Supra has lower power than the “original” “on the BMW Z4 M40i US version to 47 hp and 6 Nm of torque.
Combined with 8-speed automatic transmission and gear shifting, Supra can accelerate 0-100 km / h in 4.1 seconds; the maximum speed is electronically limited at 250 km / h. With this parameter, Supra 2020 becomes the fastest Toyota in history. The Japanese automaker will also provide a 2.0-liter turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter engine that produces 2 power levels of 194 horsepower and 254 horsepower.
Toyota also promises to bring Supra 2020 the ability to combine excellent capacity, accuracy and agility thanks to the rear-wheel drive system, low center of gravity and the volume distribution ratio before/after reaching the perfect level – 50:50.
Toyota equips Supra 2 Normal and Sport driving modes. In it, Sports mode will limit the influence of the traction control system and vehicle balance and increase the throttle response, turn off the steering power assist in bringing the purest sports driving feel. This driving mode also interferes with the differential, robust operation and sound amplification from the exhaust.
Active differential systems on Supra use electric motors and multi-disc clutches to control torque. The difference in torque distribution between the rear wheels is most evident when the vehicle is cornered, both at braking or accelerating. This system also helps to reduce the lack of steering or excess driving when cornering.
Supra is equipped with suspension after the popular multi-point form, and the front suspension has a spring fork with different double coupling, which helps to optimize the handling and increase the smoothness for passengers. Supra is equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels with 4-piston Brembo brake system and Michelin Pilot Super Sport sports tires.
Starting sales from the summer of 2019, Toyota Supra 2020 will have three versions of 3.0, 3.0 Premium and Launch Edition (based on 3.0 Premium). All versions will be equipped with Keyless Smart Entry smart key, independent 2 zone air conditioner, anti-glare rearview mirror, rear camera, automatically integrated touch wipers, electric folding mirrors and no- leather-covered steering wheel.
Supra 2020 is equipped with an infotainment system including 6.5-inch screen controlled by central control buttons. Version 3.0 Premium will have a large 8.8-inch display with integrated satellite navigation, touch control knob, telecom connection system Supra Connect, Apple CarPlay, 12-speaker JBL high-end sound system, and Wireless phone charger.
For safety, Supra is equipped with almost full front collision warning system, automatic emergency braking combined with the pedestrian detection system, lane warning and lane keeping, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, and rear collision warning.
In the US market, the proposed price for Toyota Supra 2020 is $ 49,990 and $55,250 for the Launch Edition special edition (only 1,500 units). Launch Edition has three color options: Absolute Zero White, Black Nocturnal Black, and Red Renaissance Red. Similar to BMW Z4 Roadster, Toyota Supra is produced at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz (Austria).
